The Obama administration will be speeding up two infrastructure projects at the Port of New Jersey and New York as part of its “We Can’t Wait” initiative.
“We Can’t Wait is an effort to streamline processes for important infrastructure projects across the United States. In New Jersey, a $1.6 billion plan will deepen the channels in the harbors, while a $1 billion project will raise the Bayonne Bridge.
According to porttechnology.org, moving up the federal reviews of the projects in the Port of New Jersey and New York will allow the ports to handle the larger ships coming in from the expanded Panama Canal.
And the Bayonne Bridge would be raised from 151 feet to 215 feet to accommodate larger ships. Lohud.com reported the administration pledged that all permit and review decisions for raising the Bayonne Bridge would be finished by April, months ahead of schedule.
The Journal of Commerce reported that the Obama administration hopes to complete the permit and review decisions of deepening the harbors of the Port of New Jersey and New York to 50 feet by May 2013.
Governor Chris Christie called the fast-tracking great news for New Jersey. He told the Star-Ledger, “In addition to the job growth and economic activity created by this project, this world-class project will secure the Port of New York and New Jersey’s role as the premier port of the east coast and as a powerful engine of our state and regional economies.”
The Port of New Jersey and New York has more than 250,000 jobs and is the largest port on the East Coast. The Panama Canal’s new locks open in 2015.
