Atlantic City welcomes pet owners with first dog-friendly casino

Pet owners from New Jersey and beyond will soon be able to bring their best friend to an Atlantic City casino. On February 24, Showboat Casino Hotel will become the city's first dog-friendly casino.

Known as Pet Stay, the program is coming to Atlantic City after a successfulrun at eight casino hotels in Las Vegas operated by Caesars Entertainment Corp., Showboat's parent company.

Depending on how well it is received, Pet Stay may be introduced later at the three other Caesars Entertainment casinos in Atlantic City — Bally's, Caesars and Harrah's Resort.

Showboat will begin accepting online reservations for canine-friendly rooms Feb. 14, and Feb. 24 is the first night that dogs and their owners can check in. The casino plans to throw a promotional party March 3. At that time, Showboat will present a $1,000 donation to the Ocean City Humane Society in honor of the casino's furry guests.

Nine dog-friendly hotel rooms will be limited to Showboat's New Orleans Tower. Dogs will be allowed in the hotel and public areas of the property such as the lobby. However, they will be banned from the casino floor, restaurants, bars, spas and retail shops, Messina said.

PetStay Las Vegas says guests participating in the PetStay program are greeted by several canine-friendly in-room amenities including a mat, food and water dishes, disposable waste bags and dog treats.

Each PetStay resort hosts a designated PetStay area within the hotel, equipped with welcome packets that direct guests to outdoor relief areas and dog walking routes.

The Press of Atlantic City reports guests will pay an extra $40 per night to have dogs in their room, although Showboat plans to waive the fee for the first two weeks during an introductory promotion. The casino will allow dogs weighing as much as 50 pounds each and a maximum of two per room.

Showboat has created a special "relief area" at States and Pacific avenues for dogs to take care of business. The area consists of an open lot that will be roped off.

Also, the Pet Stay program is open only to dogs. No cats will be allowed.

Meanwhile, if your doggie can't get into the Showboat, dogtipper.com lists two of the top pet-friendly casino hotels in the Atlantic City area. The Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel is minutes from the boardwalk, and close to luxurious shops, bustling casinos and lavish dining. Guests are welcome to bring one dog that weighs up to 80 pounds.

And the Knights Inn, located centrally between the heart of Atlantic City and the airport, also accepts dogs that weigh no more than 80 pounds.

Most pet owners take better care of their pets than some of the people that go to the casinos....there are many people in the casinos sitting right beside you that have lice, fleas, body odor, etc. and that doesn't deter people....I just think the size of the dog should not matter....my pet is around 90 pounds and he is the most gentleist pet you could ever have...he is more afraid of you then you would be of him....

Most people that travel with their dogs have both the mindset and the financial means to make sure their pet children are properly groomed and just as clean as most humans. Although I do applaud the efforts of welcoming pet owners, I do not feel the seperate rooms and charges should apply. I take my Maltese "Angel" with me everywhere, and she weighs less than most of my handbags...a whopping 4pounds 28ounces. Should I have to stay in a seperate area or pay extra fees for my pocket sized friend who has more hair accesories than I do....

I think Melinda K above needs to reread rules for having dogs in these casino's---they are ONLY allowed in dog-friendly rooms. You should make sure to tell them not to put you in a doggie room upon booking. Why stay away then? Dog people--just don't ruin it for the rest of us who treat our 3 1/2 lb Yorkie as our daughter (she's never ever been left alone) We get all shots, ongoing flea meds and heartworm meds, rabies, everything as we should. Our dog does not shed. We never ever leave her alone and often take a pet-sitter!! Many of the best hotels in the world accept pets--many charge a fee--some don't, but if anybody has a problem in the room caused by their dog---they should pay for it. The hotel should clean those rooms specifically and make sure there are not fleas or hairs. So both customer and hotel housekeeping should do what is right. You'd stay at a Four Seasons wouldn't you? They allow pets:-) And don't just have special dog rooms. They take CARE of everything elegantly:-) Gambling is down and casinos are having $$$ trouble in this economy--good for them to try to get more people with the special doggie rooms:-) ABOUT TIME:-) Now just stop smokers in the casinos--now that IS to me criminal.!! I don't want it on my clothes or hair or up my nose or in my lungs. I beg you to stop smoking IN the casino area. I know many who also do not go because of the smokers. But do you really think if smoking had to stop those smoker wouldn't still go gamble--I bet not---just make them go outside or to a designated space. Do the right thing. and thanks!

Although in general I am fond of animals (even though I am highly allergic to some), I oppose the pet friendly casino hotel rooms. I am a Diamond Card holder with Harrah's and visit Atlantic City quite often. Not all pet owners take excellent care of their pets, and the rooms and the common areas (such as the lobby) could be subject to fleas, ticks, etc. A lot of pets get upset when in an unfamiliar surrounding, which could result in loud barking and accidents in those areas as well. A casino hotel is no place for a dog. I would never stay in a hotel that allows pets. I vist Las Vegas 4 times a year and have now ruled out the Harrah's properties as places to stay, which is too bad since my husband and I love Paris.

I think that the pet friendly policy will deter more customers than it will attract. I hope Harrah's reconsiders.
