Dog lovers and canines alike descended upon Westvale Park on Sunday for the fourth annual DogFest 2012.
DogFest is designed as a day to bring together dogs and owners who need each other. According to Westwood-Hillsdale, NJ Patch, DogFest 2012 teaches dog owners about different pet foods and supplies and gives visitors an opportunity to adopt a rescue dog.
Dogfest2012.com reported that the event also featured guest speakers, vendors and games for the dog visitors. A dog fashion show was even part of the proceedings.
NorthJersey.com reported that about 1,000 owners attended DogFest 2012. A dozen rescue groups were looking for homes, including Greyhound Angels Adoption and the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge. The Ramapo shelter says it takes in dogs in any condition. They recently found a home for a shepherd mix named Bree, who required two hip replacements to be able to walk.
Special attractions during the day included a police dog demo by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and Daniel, who won the Hero Dog Award from the American Humane Society. Daniel and 18 other dogs were put into a gas chamber for euthanizing at an Alabama shelter. Daniel, “The Miracle Beagle,” was the only one to survive.
Daniel will now live in Nutley with new owner Joe Dwyer. All DogFest donations go to area rescue groups.
