If damage like this was done to a synagogue or a mosque it would be considered a hate crime and would have made front pages nationally. Why is it when Catholic statues are defaced it’s simply “vandalism”?

I hope your question is simply rhetorical. Jesus states that we will be hated. It should never surprise a Catholic that he is hated for his Divine Faith. As for the perpetrator, the reason he doesn't have the Truth, is because he doesn't want the Truth (to paraprase from the Bible).
