Elder care: Should seniors laugh at getting forgetful?

Victor Hugo once said, “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face."

Aging has its benefits and some downsides. The benefits are you get more help from strangers while shopping or traveling. The downside is that your memory fades -- often from one minute to the next. There are thousands of funny (maybe) stories.

I received a lengthy e-mail titled “Tell Me This Won’t Happen To Us! and want to share it with you because the stories are not only (at least to me) funny but also scary.

An elderly woman called 911 on her cell phone to report that her car had been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher. “They’ve stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, and even the accelerator,” she cried. The dispatcher said, “Stay calm. An officer is on the way.” A few minutes later, the officer radios in. “Disregard,” he says. “She got in the back seat by mistake.”
