Jensen Farms of Colorado have an announced a voluntary recall of cantaloupes it shipped to 17 states between July 29 and Sept. 10. New Jersey is on their list.
KKTV.com reports the affected canteloupes carry stickers reading: “Product of USA –Frontera Produce – Colorado Fresh – Rocky Ford” or ”Jensen Farms – Sweet Rocky Fords.”
According to Huliq, the Centers for Disease Control are reporting that at least 22 people in seven states have been infected with strains of listeria possibly coming from the outbreak. The infected canteloupes are being blamed for four deaths in Colorado and New Mexico.
The CDC says listeriosis is a rare illness that mainly affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems, according to philly.com. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
And the first lawsuit in the listeria cantaloupe outbreak was filed in Colorado on Thursday, according to thedenverchannel.com. The attorney for Charles Palmer said he bought a cantaloupe in Colorado Springs on Aug. 17, and got sick on Aug. 30.By Aug. 31, Palmer became non-responsive and was hospitalized. He remains in the hospital in serious condition after testing positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and the cantaloupe came from Jensen Farms.
