NRA spokesperson Andrew Arulanandam told CNN, "I think there's an increased realization that when something bad occurs, it's going to be between them and the criminal."
However, gun control advocates say those who already own weapons are simply just hoarding more of them due to "fear-mongering" perpetuated by the NRA.
Caroline Brewer, a spokesperson for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence told CNN, "The research we've seen indicates fewer and fewer people own more and more guns."
The record for gun sales in a single day was set in November, on the day after Thanksgiving, when 129,166 background searches were carried out on customers buying weapons, according to the Telegraph.
Brewer, who believes the surge in gun sales comes from repeat buyers, went on to tell CNN, “It would appear because of fear-mongering by the NRA since President Obama’s election that people are adding more guns to their arsenals out of fear Obama and the Democrats will take away their guns, which is absurd.”
Since the near-fatal shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords by a mentally ill gunman in Tucson last January, there has been increasing pressure by some legislators who are now calling for stricter gun control laws. Six people were killed in that shooting, and the Congresswoman sustained severe brain trauma, due to a gunshot wound to the head.
