Project Glass is a special initiative organized by Google, and their work has to been seen to be believed.
That’s because they are testing augmented reality glasses, an effort in wearable computing.
According to the New York Times, the prototype glasses that Google unveiled on Wednesday looked like well-designed wrap-around glasses with a clear display sitting above the eye. The glasses stream information to the lenses and allow the person wearing the glasses to send and receive messages by voice. A camera is also built in for recording and taking pictures.
CNN Money reports that the see-through lens is designed to display text messages, maps, reminders, video chats, and turn-by-turn directions through the voice commands, according to a concept video released by Google on YouTube.
Early reports said the glasses looked like a pair of Oakley Thumps, but the glasses appear to be made of a solid metal band running across the brow, with a small heads-up display mounted on the right side.
“Three Google employees, Babak Parviz, Steve Lee, and Sebastian Thrun, who work in the company laboratory known as Google X, said they want the public to try the glasses out and are asking for input. They said, according to TechCrunch, “We think technology should work for you — to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.”
One early review said, according to the Telegraph, “If I want to take a picture I just press a button at the top of the glasses and that’s it.”
The New York Times reported that Google hoped to sell the glasses by the end of the year, and they would cost between $250 and $600, the price range of most smartphones.
The glasses are believed to be powered by Android. Their development raises the chances of a virtual reality contact lens being developed in the future.
