Sleepless in Wisconsin: Booming sound keeps residents guessing

Folks in Clintonville, Wisconsin are edgy.

It’s that feeling you get when you have not slept well in the past few night …and you are scared that your town might just blow up.

According to the Associated Press, residents who attended Wednesday night’s town hall say the sounds are like distant thunder or a door slamming. Others say the booms sound like explosions.

But after checking the gas and sewer lines, inspecting a local landfill and asking the nearby military base if they were doing exercises, the town is still baffled in trying to identify the origin of these noises.

“People in the area are certainly frustrated,” said City Administrator Lisa Kuss, according to an Associated Press report on Christian Science Monitor.

Even the seismic station near the small town reported no serious tremors that would cause these sounds.

And now the International Business Times, via WTAQ, reports that the booms are spreading south and west.

While some residents joke that the sound may be aliens underground, perhaps the next “War of the Worlds,” at least one resident says the loud booms have caused cracks in her home.

A geologist from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Steve Dutch, thinks the problem may have something to do with the town’s water table.

"Maybe the very dry winter caused more water to be removed from the water table, either through pumping or natural flow," he told the Press. That might cause the earth above to groan.

The AP reported that last night the booms took a break, and police received less phone calls than previous nights. Still, the unsettling mystery has some leaving town until the disturbance is gone for good.
