Football is known as a hard contact sport with plenty of risks, but in an unusual decision, a specific opponent became the latest safety concern of one New Jersey high school team.

Last week on Friday, Kearny High School decided to forfeit their game against St. Peter’s Prep football team. According to the Star-Ledger, Kearny forfeited the game to what they called safety concerns, for potential injuries to the players.

Kearny’s Board of Education had announced the cancelation the day of the game on the board’s website. According to the Star-Ledger the site read, “Tonight’s KHS varsity football game has been cancelled.”

Prior to the game, St. Peter’s Prep was going into the game with a 2-0 winning record. Kearny had the opposite record with 0-2, according to Yahoo Sports.

St. Peter’s coach Rich Hansen was bothered by the decision but was told by Kearny Athletic Director, John Millar, that the game would go on within days prior to the game. Hansen received notice of the forfeit until the day of the game.

“On Monday their AD called and said we’re playing” said Hansen to the Star-Ledger. “We knew it wasn’t going to be a competitive game, but we were going to try to play our younger kids. And we don’t want to just have a forfeit victory this week.”

The game can be ruled a forfeit as a vote will be taking place before it is declared official. If the forfeit is declared official, it will give Hansen his 200th career victory.

Not only was the game going to be Coach Hansen's 200th win, but also SPP's 100th consecutive win for varsity football in the county! It was a depressing way to have that happen after all of us students were getting excited for the
milestones!!!

Children can be conned out of inheritance after multiple marriages

BY CAROL ABAYA NEWJERSEYNEWSROOM.COM THE SANDWICH GENERATION Multiple marriages and blended families can mean children get cheated out of money and assets their parent(s) earned and had before the second or third marriage. At the 2012 senior citizens’ law day conference, Lawrence A. Friedman, Bridgewater elder law attorney, said elders need to protect their children of prior marriages from being disinherited. "Even if your spouse’s current will provides for your children, your spouse may change it after you pass away,” he said. In addition to protecting one's child, an appropriate will can minimize N.J. estate taxes, which kick in if assets are over $675,000. At the conference, Cathyanne Pisciotta from North Brunswick discussed guardianship which could be necessary if various legal documents are not signed. Pisciotta said that if a person does not have a durable power of attorney (for financial affairs) and a living will (for medical decisions), anyone else can seek guardianship of that person. An expensive court proceeding is mandatory. And she said, “If one person seeks guardianship, someone else can challenge the appointment. Another relative may seek to be appointed guardian because he/she wants the money and power.”
