Camden residents say officers responding to a fight between teenagers Friday night opened fire in their Rosedale neighborhood, leaving bullet holes in vehicles and a house and killing a beloved family pet.
The 9 p.m. incident has drawn the ire of residents who say the officers owe them an apology for recklessly shooting on a street crowded with children, the Courier Post reported.
According to eyewitness statements, police, who Mayor Dana Redd said were trying to disperse a large crowd, fired at least 33 shots. Robert Corrales, a spokesman for Redd said the pit bull approached the officer in an aggressive manner and the officer was forced to shoot him.
However, Sherronda Aycox, the owner of the dead 8-month-old blue pit bull, said her dog, Capone was simply walking down the street towards children he saw during his daily walks when the officer drew his weapon and fired.
Aycox told the paper that another officer told the cop not to shoot Capone, but the officer fired anyway. Other witnesses say Capone, who was on a leash, got loose and ran into the area where officers were present. That's when they say two or three officers fired at least 33 shots at the pit bull puppy, NBC Philadelphia reported.
A Saturday morning police investigation found at least two bullets that pierced the side of Delia Rodriguez' home, ricocheting off the ceiling and shattering her front window. The grandmother of six lives across the street and four houses away from where the officers were shooting.
An attempt to reach the public information officer for the Camden Police Department was unreturned.
