MOVIE REVIEW
Someone has a fantasy about educated, middle-class women working as prostitutes. A small number of such women must exist, but judging by contemporary media, there are hordes of them, all having a great time. They live in fabulous apartments, wear gorgeous clothes, and always seem to enjoy having sex for money with strangers. “Elles,” co-written and directed by Malgoska Szumowska and starring Juliet Binoche, is another in this specialized genre, and about as credible as the rest. ("Elles" is being shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, as well as New York City theaters.)
Binoche plays Anne, a magazine writer with a businessman husband and two sons, who is struggling to finish a piece on Parisian college students who work as prostitutes to pay their tuition bills. Alternating scenes contrast Anne’s harried life and sexually unsatisfying marriage with the appointments the two prostitutes have with different clients. Guess which comes off looking like more fun?
